Further Conference Volumes

This edited volume, which grew out of the 2019 annual conference of the Society for Arab and Islamic Law at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen, addresses migration and the law of the country of origin (Heimatrecht). The topic is relevant because of the large number of refugees from the war and civil war zones of the Middle East, above all Iraq and Syria, who came to Germany mainly in 2014 and 2015. The volume examines, on the one hand, how the German legal system deals with specific legal questions and typical problems arising from migration. On the other hand, it also considers the laws of the countries of origin and the social situation of migrants in their home countries, which formed the self-evident legal basis of their lives until they were forced to leave. The contributors are lawyers and scholars of Islamic studies, as well as practitioners who offer insights into practical aspects of family law, in particular the best interests of the child in Germany. The volume explores how, and in what forms, the social and familial embedding of migrants functions within the legal order of the Federal Republic of Germany.

Reihe für Osnabrücker Islamstudien, Berlin et al. 2019.

The volume marks the 20th anniversary of the Society for Arab and Islamic Law and the 5th anniversary of the Institute of Islamic Theology at Osnabrück University. Some of the contributions are based on papers given at a joint conference on ‘Religiöse Normen in der Moderne zwischen Text und Kontext’ [Religious Norms in Modernity between Text and Context], held at Osnabrück University in October 2017. Further studies by selected specialists have been added. The aim of this publication is to present German language research on Islamic normativity from multiple disciplinary perspectives and, in particular, to strengthen the links between Islamic theology, Islamic studies and law. The book can be ordered from bookshops or directly from the publisher.
